The Phantom of the Opera

Posted: 1/2/04 at 9:42pmI saw it in London because my father was willing to pay full price to see it. The other shows I saw for discount were all better (My Fair Lady, Blood Brothers, Reduced Shakespeare). Saying that, it wasn't that bad. The amplification was at times painfull, but some of it I really fell in love with. Not good enough to have run for as long as it has, but good enough.

Posted: 1/2/04 at 10:37pmI'm just wondering HOW many recordings do they have? Because EVERY time myself or one of my friends have gone and seen the show with the same actors...it sounds different. Updated On: 1/2/04 at 10:37 PM

Howard also told a funny story about how the sound engineer once mixed up the title track tapes of the lead and the understudy and played the understudy's version instead of the lead actress so she had to lip sync to someone elses version of the song... lol. needless to say, he said she was none too happy about the incident.
he explained how with all the movement to get into the boat (the characters that cross the bridge are not the leads but look alikes), it was too difficult to sing live and when the show first started they tried mixing the prerecorded section with a cut in to live vocals once the boat appears on stage but he hinted that it was because of Brightman who did not want to sing the end of the song night after night that the whole song remains lip synced.

I very much like the show, but hearing the title song today, reminded me of something that does bother me in that particular song. There is a line where Christine sings "I am the mask you wear," and then the Phantom sings, "It's me they hear..."
That line makes absolutely no sense to me -- why doesn't she sing "Behind the mask you wear..."?

Posted: 1/3/04 at 6:50pmI thoroughly enjoyed Phantom when I saw it - mainly because of Hal Prince's brilliant staging. But I hardly ever listen to the Cd of the score. I can't say I dislike the songs - they are pleasant enough - but, apart from ALL I ASK OF YOU, I find the score terribly bland and boring.

Could it be that that he is using her; he will sing through her, figuratively speaking. He cannot appear and sing in public, but he is"inside her mind," will become her teacher (Angel of Music), and when she sings, it is in a sense the Phantom they will hear. She is his "mask."
