Soon to home to the most outrageous, spectacular show to play London in years.
The Palace Theatre sits on what must be one of the most spectacular sites for a theatre anywhere in London.
Opened in 1891 and called The Royal English Opera House and build by D'Oyle Carte exclusively for their operettas, it failed drastically and within a few years was home to some of the biggest names on the music hall circuit.
The Palace has been home to two of Londons longest running shows, the original 'Jesus Christ Superstar' for nearly 9 years and again the original production of 'Les Miserables' for 18 years.
It has slowly, over the last 10 years, been going thru a restoration project to return it to its original glory. In the 1950s the auditorium was painted a deep plum red color, the paint was bought on the cheap from British Rail by then owner Prince Littler and the decorators just went and covered every inch of the beautiful auditorium without discrimination. They covered stunning murals and Italian marble in one stroke.
It was only when Andrew Lloyd Webber started to remove the paint when 'Les Miserables' closed that the true beauty was recalled. The red can still be seen at some places round the auditorium, hideous.
It is one of Londons most spectacular auditoriums and also has one of the steepest, most vertigo inducing balconys in the world.
