The Producers - just curious

One of the bookers of one of my friend's movie house screened the movie and said it was horrible. I occasionally agree on some of his reviews (He loved RENT, which is good for me. And predicted RENT will do 50 million at the box office.)
Anyway, in his words, he said it's like "watching a video taped movie that was recorded on stage." And that Matthew Broderick's performance was so annoying that he wanted to "leave after the first 5 minutes" after he appeared on screen. Also predicted that the film version will do 25 million at the box office overall. Anyone who screened the movies agree? Or is this guy totally wrong?

What you have to remember is that there are all kinds of barometers for success for a movie today. Whether the film or someone in it is nominated and wins is hardly the only thing that dictates success. Think about box office earnings, attention from the media that will help tickets sales and eventually DVD sales, and whether the movie does well only in urban areas and on both coasts or whether it does well across the country (will people in Iowa and Kansas relate to the Producers or Rent?). AND THEN there is the international market where some films have been known to make back all of their investment when they do poorly in the U.S.
As for these boards and websites and blogs that have cropped up as predictors, in the end you have to remember that even the best predictors of Oscar winners (the ones that plaster their opinions all over TV prior to the awards) are sometimes terribly wrong and there are upsets and overturns all the time. So, sit tight, go see the movies as they are released and decide for yourself. If you liked it and want to buy it on DVD later, do so...no one has to know that you bought the DVD of a film that didn't do so well at the box office. It is, after all, entertainment and it is very subjective.

Yup. I know all that, I work in the entertainment/marketing industry. I always watched any film that I was interested in, whether its good or bad review. I am the type that 'had to see it for myself.' I was annoyed when I heard him saying all that stuff and urked. Just firing the Producer's cannon and had to tell someone what he said.

Dame's review here was just the opposite:

I don't really give a fig about reviewers and awards. This film sounds like something I'll love and I'm sure a lot of other people will too.
