ONCE UPON A MATTRESS is coming to television. THE PRODUCERS will hit theatres this December. Other planned movie musicals are DREAMGIRLS, HAIRSPRAY, RENT, SWEENEY TODD, and many others.
We have discussed which shows are being turned into movie musicals to death. Several rumours buzzing (we know HAIRSRAY and RENT is happening, I know DREAMGIRLS is probably happening).
What I wish to discuss is the IMPACT this renaissance will have on this country.
Will half of Hollywood now be doing musicals again? What impact will this have on Broadway? How would this revival in movie musicals change America?
Well, it's good for one thing...to rekindle american general interest in the theater, and keep all of us in jobs....but unless they start casting people who can actually SING, it sort of makes performers look bad.

It would be great if Broadway and Hollywood would have such a close exchange as they had in days gone by. For instance why shouldn't more movie composer have a try at writing shows. They at least know how to write decent melodies. Take Marc Shaiman for instance.

Gosh, Sweeney Todd? Who? When? Where?
I am going to be like one of those Star Wars geeks and camp out in front of the Multiplex to see that one.
And Dreamgirls? Be still me heart! Again, details?
Miramax has DREAMGIRLS. A screenwriter is adapting the script now.
I think Universal has SWEENEY TODD. Last I read, Kevin Kline and Glenn Close were up for the leads.
To the best of my knowledge, any actors that have been associated with a "Sweeney Todd" movie project have been only by rumors. The only two people to be officially linked to a possible 2005 production are John Logan to write the screenplay and Sam Mendes to direct.
Yes, but I believe it was Variety that reported Kline & Close were in consideration.

If these films are financial hits, then we will see more musical films. It's as simple as that. It will have nothing to do with whether or not the films are good, just the box-office take compared to the film's cost. I hope they're all hits!
MOULIN ROUGE - Hit
CHICAGO - Hit
PHANTOM - Potential Hit
PRODUCERS is sure to be a hit. As is HAIRSPRAY.
The others have great potential.
BAT BOY is another film definitely in the works.
We are already seeing more musical films coming. There is no doubt about it, the rebirth of the movie musical is nearly here - the early stages have begun.
Feodor Sverdlov, as long as they're hits, there will be more. I think as soon as one or two are big bombs financially, the Renaissance will be over like that. Of course, like the rest of you, I would love to see it continue, especially if some it creates good synergy between stage and screen.
