We're trying to organize a school trip to see a Broadway show, and I was thinking of Gypsy. Does anyone know how large the Shubert Theatre is?
The student rate tickets for like $35.00 are in the rear balcony, so it would make more sense to try to get a small theatre so they won't be horrible seats.
Another thought was Millie, but when I went to see it, I thought the Marquis was pretty big. Any suggestions?
The Shubert is a pretty large theatre. I've heard rear balcony isn't that good.
The Shubert has about 1,450 seats. The balcony is high, but if the seats are in the center, they are not that terrible.

The Shubert seats 1,513 +/- a few
Just checked: Variety reports 1,447 as seating capacity for Gypsy at the Shubert.

damn.. where'd the rest of the seats go?? They took THAT many out for GYPSY
I would say the rear balc at the Shubert isn't so great. You might try the Virginia -- it's a large theatre, but LSOH is better from the mezz & the rear mezz ain't so bad there! Have fun.
I saw LSOH though, and although it was great, I wanna' see a show I've never seen before.
I have seen a few shows with class trips. The best seats we had where in the Lion King and 42nd st. If you have over 20 people you get group rate and I think they run rates for schools maybe. You should look in to that becase my adviser was good at getting us good seats for large groups. So there has to be a way to do it.
Well on Broadway.com there are group discounts for most of the shows. Unfortunately all the student seats are in the "rear balcony".

Just don't wear bi-foculs (like I did) in the Shubert balcony. You're way the hell up there in the nose bleeds. Also, Gypsy has nudity (it is a show about strippers) but you can't really tell that from the balcony anyway. Since you're taking school kids, I thought you might want to know.
Millie, on the other hand, is a safe show for kids, and a lot of fun. Both theatres have around 1500 seats, but the Marquis is much better aranged. Architectually, though, the Shubert has more charm. Hope that helps.
Saw "Buddy" &"Big" from the balcony - No problem at all

CORRECTION: No production of "Gypsy" has EVER featured nude strippers. The latter half of the 2nd half deals with strippers, yes, but never in the show in any of it's incarnations reveal any nudity. I know Tammy Blanchard (Louise aka Gypsy) wears something skimpy in "Let Me Entertain You," but that's as close to nudity that you'll get. Go see Gypsy, you won't regret it.
This is a highschool trip, sorry if I left that out. And I'm sure the strippers won't be too much of a problem. And as much as I'd like to see Millie a second time, I still want to push our choir director for a show nobody has really seen at my school.
I know about four other people besides me who also saw Millie and I'm not sure anyone has seen Gypsy yet.
