The Thing About Men
The Thing About Men#0
Posted: 4/22/05 at 11:37amThe Thing About Men is playing in the LA area and I was wondering if anyone saw it last year in New York? I believe Marc Kudisch and Leah Hocking were in it and there's an Original Cast CD which I have not heard. Opinions?

Don't forget Ron Bohmer!
Fun show, I liked it a lot. Script was a little spotty(with ultimately a completely implausible ending), but I thought the music was a lot of fun, especially being sung by this amazing cast. I recommend the cast album highly. "Opportunity Knocking" and "No competition for me" are my two favorites, but Ron Bohmer's "Free, Easy Guy" is very cool and catchy.

Posted: 4/22/05 at 1:51pmI didn't see it in New York, but I did catch the pre- off- broadway run when the show was in Florida and simply called "Men". If you like I Love You, You're Perfect... then you'll totally like "Men" because the writers infuse it with a lot of the same qualities. I also enjoy the OCR but mainly because of the songs "Because" and "The Road to Lucy". TOTALLY worth seeing.

If you are interested you can listen to an Interview with the Director Larry Raben and the Lead Stan Chandler.(two very funny and talented guys) They were both on Straight Talk with Art Levine a couple of weeks ago.

Mallardo, I saw it last night in Long Beach and LOVED it! It helped that I'd listened to the OC recording a few times, so I knew the music and could really appreciate the songs better than had I heard them the first time at the performance. There are some very funny numbers, and some very lovely and touching ones as well. The script is hilarious, and only falls apart a bit at the end when the characters behave rather implausibly. John Bisom, who was the very proper Georg in their recent She Loves Me reveals (and how!) himself to be a major hunk in the role of Sebastian; he's got Broadway level looks, voice, and charisma. Stan Chandler is sensational as Tom, not only singing marvelously but proving himself adept at (very) physical humor. Elizabeth Ward Land, another superb singer/actress, is lovely as Lucy. Craig A. Meyer and Jodie Langel as Man and Woman are fantastic in a multitude of roles. Doing an off-Broadway style musical on a huge stage presents challenges, but Musical Theater West proves themselves up to meeting them, by utilizing the entire stage area, and more especially through the use of rear screen projections which not only change the locale, but propel the plot and provide comic commentary. I'd hesitated about seeing this show, but Gold Star Events got me a great seat at half price, and the cast recording proved enormously winning. Looking at the pictures in the CD notes, I would venture to say that MTW's production is at the level of the original, if not better, if only because the actors are so very good looking! (Superficial of me perhaps, but true.) Long Beach isn't that far if you live in L.A. so do go see this show if you get the chance. Oh, and Stan Chandler and his wife Kirsten are doing They're Playing Our Song next month in Brea!!!

I forgot to add that it's also quite risque. Lots of talk about d*ck size and the like. And spicy language. The words "f*ck me" were changed to "bleep me" in the song Downtown Bohemian Slum, but the F word makes a surprise appearance in a hilarious line right near the end of the show. I think it may have been too much for some of the older or more conservative audience members, but I was laughing a lot. Let us know if you like it.
