re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Pal Joey closed months ago, Tommy.

'next to normal's word of mouth is extremely positive and spreading very quickly. In addition to that they have running commercials, TONY performance, 3 awards, excellent reviews and a billboard in Times Sqaure. It will be fine and definitely make it through the summer.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Btw, i havent seen the show in London since 2007, now is it my bad memory or is the choreography different on Broadway? And have these chages been implemented into the London production?

I'm pretty sure that parts of the choreography - particularly in the 'Angry Dance' - are altered from Billy to Billy to showcase the particular dancing talents of whoever's onstage that night, so I guess it's safe enough to say the choreography is most probably different. :)

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Angry Dance was very different on the Tony excerpt on Youtube from the West End version. Much more violent; the British Coal placards; Maggie's speech; no frustration in the outhouse; more police involvement. Very exciting, frightening and brilliant.

I haven't seen Billy since 2007 either so don't know if they've been incorporated into the West End version.

Scripps, the Angry Dance isn't like that in the actual Broadway production either. It was just a very odd performance.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

"N2N strikes me as this year's Grey Gardens".

I don't see a parallel really. When I saw Grey Gardens, act one bored me senseless - in fact the score bored me senseless in act two as well. But the book picked up in act two and the two central performances kept me interested. Next To Normal I found totally riveting from the first second to the last - and the score totally blew me away.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Maybe not the first second - more like the big downbeat, accompanied by the full blackout, in the middle of the prelude.

Studying the score today, I have noticed that Kitt and Yorkey have used the oft-forgotten technique of leitmotif throughout the piece. A technique normally confined to the operas of Wagner, or the scores of Boublil and Schonberg, it creates themes for emotions, characters or situations that subconciously guide the audience through the plot.

Every note, every lyric, every rhythmic beat in the score is there for a reason and serves a dramatic purpose. This score is truly one of the greatest rock musical scores ever written - in my opinion better than Rent, better than Spring Awakening,

A brief statistic:

60% of the competitive awards (ie excluding lifetime achievement etc) went to productions that originated in London.

And that's counting Angela Lansbury in Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, directed by Michael Blakemore, as American.

the choreography and whole Angry Dance sequence was amazing!i loved it a lot, and think they should deffinitely put it into the running productions!

However amazing the Angry Dance was to us, remember that middle America will have had no idea what was going on. A lot of non-theatregoers were left very dumbfounded.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Some of the choreography for the Tony performance was different, but for the most part the police, outhouse, Maggie talking, and the coal cards are all in the actual show. As of a couple of weeks ago, the UK version has not changed.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Hang on!! Is that not how the number is performed in the London?

My most recent Billy memory is from closing night in Sydney, and except for a few choreographic changes for the different kids playing Billy, that was exactly what the Angry Dance was like. The Maggie Thatcher voice over was in it, the words on the board thingys, the police ... that was all there.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Nope, the UK version is VERY different from NYC. The Broadway version and Australia are very similar. Search on youtube---Leon Cooke Angry Dance.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

If I recall correctly, I heard somewhere the Australian production has different music to it. Don't know if there is any truth to that though...

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

The Angry Dance performed on the Tonys was pretty much the same structure as performed in Sydney.

There was no major new music written for Sydney.

Without context, there was nothing to engage a viewer seeing the ANGRY DANCE .... it was just some Mexican jumping bean lashing out while confusing things were happening all around him. What can be brilliant and forceful as part of an overall performance can fail miserably as a snippet designed to convince potential audience members to come and see the show.

Assuming you are referring to David that is a horrible and bigot statement.

And...
1) David is from Canada but of Cuban descent.
2) Trent gave the performance.

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

Another statistic: those productions that originated in London took 33% of the nominations and converted them into 60% of the awards.

By way of a comparator, the Olivier for Best Musical has gone to a production originating in New York 50% of the time.

So, a bloody good night for West End theatre!

Seen Billy twice this year and can confirm the Tony version is different, would welcome the change over here.

Billy will play Broadway for years to come.

Any rumours where Billy is going to open next?

re: The Tonys 2009 - And The Winners Are.....

I guess original musicals were not the in thing this year

Since totally original musicals are incredibly rare, they are generally not the in thing every year. The only musicals with both and original book and original score to win the Best Musical Tony are:

The Music Man
Redhead
Bye Bye Birdie
Hallelujah, Baby
Company
A Chorus Line
City of Angels
Rent
Contact (though, arguably not a musical, but it won the prize)
Avenue Q
In the Heights

That's 11 shows in 60 years and only 3 in the last decade.

However amazing the Angry Dance was to us, remember that middle America will have had no idea what was going on.

While I agree it was not a good choice for the Tonys, I doubt that the members of middle America who actually chose to watch the Tonys would be entirely unfamiliar with the film. The Angry Dance scene from the film was quite memorable and iconic. It's not like anyone who has seen the film would be hard-pressed to make the connection and the film was quite popular in the US, earning three Oscar nominations.
