I was told by the designer that they wanted a black / Mr spock look to him. The original design draing had him with a large lyre shaped tribal tattoo looking thing on his forehead. My intial thought when I saw the original drawing was they wanted a young Jeoffrey Holder, which I thought was a pretty cool idea.

The end result wound up looking a lot more like "Data" than "Spock".
