Just home... Finally got around to seeing this wonderful show, after hearing so much about it. Not much to add to the rest of the accolades ! The show is astounding ! Luscious score, amazing acting... and of course, Mary Louise Wilson, and the incredible Christine Ebersole ! I have not felt his way about a show since "Caroline Or Change" !

Oh, and how about some love for Erin Davie !!?? Loved her !!!

I WILL be going back to see this show numerous times !!!

Her acting and voice were amazing !!! CE and MLW deservedly get the majority of the ink, but really thought Davie's performance was special !!!

I totally agree.
I don't know what it was about Erin Davie that just didn't rub off on my good side. I think it was the way she played the character, I don't know.

But, I'm so happy you enjoyed it.

I remember after I saw it I just walked around in this trance, I was so affected.

		     			I
that score. I had already splurged a little before the show, and I had said I was going to wait until the OBC, but come intermission, I had to buy that CD.

I saw it last night, and I loved Erin Davie, as well.

The show is good, but Act One really is disjointed. They don't do a good job of setting up the mother/daughter relationship so that it logically leads to Act Two. And it would be an easy fix, which is why is is so disappointing.

Everything in Act Two was better.

And Christine Ebersole was priceless. It's a shame the craft of the show isn't as good as the performers.

I agree Julian. I think the score is excellent. I've been listening to it non-stop since I got the OBCR.
I'm so glad someone finally brought up the fabulousness of Miss Erin Davie! She's truly brilliant as Edie.

Whoa. This has been brought up before.

See, I adore the first act. I thought it set up the second act perfectly.

And regarding Erin's performance, I think her portrayal of Little Edie is perfect. I can totally see the transformation from her to Christine. And in Choose to be Happy, her little part completely breaks my heart in half.

The show IS "disjointed"...just like the lives of its central characters. The quirkiness of this production perfectly reflects the oddity and complexity of these women's lives and relationships.

I'm suprised ppl don't mention this as a possible contedor for "Best New Musical." But whatever.

I wondered why it didn't have an overture.
RentBoy: I think it will get nominated, but I don't think it will win. It really won't tour well, and normally the more commercially sucessful shows win. I'd love it to win though.
Loved, loved, loved the show and listen to the CR all the time. However, out of all of the major cast players, Erin I liked the least. I still thought she gave a wonderful performance, but I did not feel for the way I felt for the others. But I am odd, so who knows!

Yeah, that's true, but I don't know, I always like to have hope. Not saying it's better than the other shows or anything, cause I haven't seen any of them, just heard them.

I love this show. And I stand by my opinion that Erin Davie should be nominated for the Supporting Actress Tony, even though it is a slim chance with such a season, especially one packed with bigger "names." I personally would prefer a nomination for her over Ms. Wilson. A girl can dream, right? Ms. Davie's performance is heartbreaking, and her deconstruction at the end of Act I feeds brilliantly into Ms. Ebersole's portrayal of Little Edie in Act II. I sincerely hope that her talents are not overlooked by the awards' nominating committees and voters this year.
I agree that Erin Davie definitely deserves a Tony nod., she really seems to understand her role and creates a great connection with Christine Ebersole's Big Edie in Act I. Her "Daddy's Girl" is one of the highlights of the whole show.
I completely agree about Erin! I've said it before, but her "Daddy's Girl" was the highlight of the first act. I really wish that this would win for best musical. I think it's the stongest new musical of the season (although I have not seen Lovemusik).
I don't think Act I is messy at all.

Well, how would YOU fix it? Why does it need fixing?

There IS not clean cut and definite explanations as to why and how the women ended up the way they did. That's not the point of the show...it's not supposed to offer an explanation.

I personally (and we all know my biases) have never been so moved by a show. I've seen it 11 times and will keep going back.
As for Tony nods:
Erin Davie, sadly, won't be recognized, I don't think
Mary Louise Wilson will be nominated, and I believe win, as will Christine Ebersole.
It may get best book or score. Book seems more likely, given that SA will probably get score.
We'll see...
I think William Ivey Long may win for costumes, it stands a chance for best orchestrations
Best Musical...will be nominated...should win...probably won't.

I agree !! I would love to see her get a Tony nom, but dont think it will happen, unfortunately.

You put into words perfectly exactly how I feel.

I like Erin Davie in GG very much. But Mary Louise Wilson's glowing performance is one that only a seasoned, mature and vastly experienced actor could portray. There is so much going on in Ms. Wilson's portrayal of Edith Bouvier Beale--and much of it below the surface--that it's easy to overlook just how complex a portrait she has created.

I would love for Ms. Davie to get a Tony nod, but, as we all know, when two performers from the same production are nominated, they often "split" the votes and someone in another show gets the award. I don't think Tony awards (or ANY awards) really mean anything in the big picture, but when you're very "attached" to a production, it's only natural to hope it receives the recognition you think you deserves.

So I hope that Mary Louise Wilson walks off the stage on June 10 with that trophy in her hand because her performance is nothing short of genius. (Erin will get her Tony one day!!!)
