The case for Lithgow's Tony

So my best friend and I both won DRS lotto (which was pretty big tonight, actually), ended up just right of dead center (my fourth time seeing the show, his first). While it's obvious this whole cast is screaming "TONY", I'm particularly charmed by just how sly and nuanced John Lithgow's performance is. NLB's Freddy (and Ruprecht) is amazing, and worthy of every accolade in the book, but I had shivers tonight during "Love Sneaks In". Gorgeous. And Lithgow's eyes are physical comedians in themselves. One look and the audience knows exactly where he's going.
Got my free CD. Off to listen :)

Posted: 4/30/05 at 12:33amI wasn't impressed with Lithgow really. Not because he wasn't good, but because i'd seen all of that before from him. It wasn't new. He's been awarded for that in the past (rightly so) and I'm not sure he deserves another one for it. Norbort however deserves a Tony as does Joanna. I don't think anyone else in the cast really gave a Tony worthy performance. Sherie didn't do much for me. She was just kind of there. Ya know who does deserve mention, Rachelle Rak. She was random chorus girl number 3 but she has something extra. she has a featured dance moment. Fierce. I wanted her to come back again and again. I watched her and remembered why I liked "I Gotcha" in Fosse.

Posted: 4/30/05 at 1:00amI couldn't disagree more that Joanna deserves a Tony. While I was totally pleased with her performance, there was absolutely nothing about it that made me go WOW...I just thought she seemed like a really neat, classy lady. In fact, her voice cracked about three times. It wasn't anything bad but it wasn't good either.

I thought the beauty of Joanna's performance was the subtlety, the timing to deliver the lines the only way they would actually be extremly funny and I found her singing heavenly.
I also adore Litgow's understated performace, his eyes do have the abilty to make a scene by themselves, but Norbert owned the show and the TONY and all the accolades are seriously deserved.

Posted: 4/30/05 at 1:10amI think Norbert's Buddha belly should get a Tony.

Posted: 4/30/05 at 1:11amA little Buddha shaped Tony of its own, how cute :)

the cast is pretty perfect
Lithgow is so deserving
and he will Help Norbutt's Win.
and if Vicky Clark wasn't Drop Dead
Sherie would have a real chance

Norbutt! I shall forever be calling him that now. Especially since TheGahisSilent told me about how Norbert mooned the audience tonight. :-X
BACK ON TOPIC......John's adorable. Do they give Tony's out for Adorableness? Because they should, really. I mean, c'mon people.

Posted: 4/30/05 at 2:21amYes, adorable, but have you listened to "Love Sneaks In"? It's gorgeous.
#12re: The case for Lithgow's Tony
Posted: 4/30/05 at 2:28amI think Norbert deserves it...since Lithgow's been there, done that.

Norbert must get the Tony! In all the shows he's been in, he's never showed these comedic abilities that are "puring out his ASS!" in DRS. I'd be surprised and disturbed if he doesn't win.
Jazzy-I agree about Rachelle Rak. She's one of those people you can't take your eyes off. I love that dance that she does, very impressive.

Posted: 4/30/05 at 10:04amLithgow's chances of even getting a nom are low, not because of the quality of his performance or anything like that. He's been snubbed so far, and so, just a nom for him would be a godsend. I seriously doubt he has chances of winning.

Though I doubt he'll get the tony, I love Lithgow. My favorite DRS line--(While looking at his ass for imperfections) "My god, it's like the David!"
He is so good at playing men who think the world of themselves.

I LOVE John in DRS and really hope he's recognized with a nomination. Norbert and John work so well together on stage, you just feel 'the love' between them.
Unfortunately, I think BobbyBubby is absolutely right though...

Posted: 4/30/05 at 2:00pmDoes anyone think there was another actor this season that could possibly upset Norbert at the Tonys?

Although John is great in the part, I just really don't like him as a singer. He just doesn't have the singing, but he can pull each accent of fantastically!
I really think Norbert deserves the Tony. I could not think of anyone else that could play the part of Freddy Benson. Norbert can pull off a fun but serious Jamie in L5Y, and now he's pulling off a total con artist. I really think he's a great actor, and that he deserves it.
