Oooh, scandal! I too, do not like that version very much. I think it has it's moments (I like the scene when Erik is giving lessons to Christine while at the same time Carlotta and her husband are humiliated with disastrous perfomances of classic operas). I don't remember pretty much any of the songs except, like three, most of the score was not memorable. Also plot wise, it was veyr odd, much weaker than ALW's (which in comparison looks like the holy grail to that show's adaptation, but, wont get into that again).
To secret-soul: I enjoyed reading your post and with that in mind look at the whole show very differently. Still, I thought the show lacked much of the emotion and message of Erik that the novel held. But, no adaptation can be perfect (in one way or another). So, I will now close the box to my opinion on that and discuss other things.

I thought EVERYBODY knew the ending but I guess not. Here's what happens:
Christine runs from Roaul and jumps to her "death" in the lake. She meets up with the Phantom at a trap door and says, "It worked!" after he "disappeared" from behind his throne. Roaul sings a small song about being changed as Christine and the Phantom walk off. Christine says to the Phantom, "We can never come back to the Opera, can we?" He says, "No!" She says, "I only wish I could tell Meg." He says, "NO! Not if we're to be safe."
The ensemble sing the last line:
"No one likes the PHANTOM! PHANTOM! PHANTOM--------!
That's the way I remember it, anyway.
Meg puts on the mask and since she is such a terrible dancer becomes the Phantom of the Opera and teaches little girls to sing.
what? something about Raoul is gay and it has a happy ending? Or maybe Meg marries the Persian who alluvasudden makes an appearance at the end of the show and then they have scary little ballerina children. hmmm....
