It's probabaly just to subtle for me, I tend to overanalyze things to the point that I completely miss the point.
I'd love to hear various opinions on it.
I think its the pretty standard symbolism: light= understanding, discovery.
The light is her love for Fabrizio.
"Tiny sweet
And then it grows
And then it fills the air
Who knows what you call it?
I don't care
Out of somewhere I have something I have never had
And sad is happy
That's all I see"
"It's rushing up
It's pouring out
It's flying through the air
All through the air
Who knows what you call it?
But it's there
It is there
All I see is
All I want is tearing from inside
I see it
Now I see it everywhere
It's everywhere
It's everything and everywhere
Fabrizio
The Light in the Piazza
My Love"
But it's more than just her love - its the discovery of her love, the realization: just as Margaret discovers the depths of her true love for her daughter .

The meaning of the song? It means bad, pretentious writing. Nothing more or less.

It opens tomorrow night here in LA. I'll be there, although I've already seen it on PBS.
