The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

I bought my copy at Colony yesterday. I just couldn't wait. I love it. It was a bit strange getting used to Dot's accent, but she is suprisingly fantastic. And the guy who plays George is equally terrific. It's nice to hear a new recording with different folks. My favorite track on the new cd is "Move On". It's beautiful. This is a must have for Sunday in the Park fans. Well, it's a must have for any Sondheim fan.

Saw this production twice at the Menier and can't wait to see the transferred production. Daniel Evans is the best George I've seen or heard. His relationship with Dot is the only one I've actually believed; so very truthful. Such a moving performance. I hope he's able to capture this in the recording.

So jealous. I want to see a live production of this so much. I'm hoping it will find it's way back on a Broadway stage very soon. And as much as I love John Doyle, I don't want it to be an actor/musician production.

Any of you who have the recording ... can you tell me what instruments/players are used in this production. I had heard that it's cut down from the original.

Does this affect the experience ... does it loose anything having less players in the orchestra?

It's a great recording. The sound quality is so clear and so clean cut. I love the new orchestrations and the cast is really good as well. The accents took some getting used to, but this cast delivers the most beautiful "Sunday" (the actual song) I've ever heard.

Colony is always so expensive. Online the cd was 13.99and w/ s/h 16.99. Not bad for a two disc set.

Never. Never buy from the Colony...always shop around. Their prices are outrageous and they don't carry a thing you can't get online or at Virgin for 10-20 dollars cheaper.

In response to someone's question, the show doesn't lose anything. It sounds fantastic!

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

SUNDAY is among my top 3 favorite shows of all time, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on the new CD.

Upon listening to it, I was beyond diasppointed.

What the hell? Is Eliza Doolittle playing Dot? British, sure - but Cockney-esque? It's just plain sloppy.

I dislike the new orchestrations, and some of the line readings are embarrasing. It sounds like a made for TV soap opera. I absolutely hate it.

On stage, I'm sure it's better - but this is a recording I will never listen to again.

I completely agree with you there, I have not seen it either, but with some of the line deliveries I can't help but question what the hell they were thinking.
Once I finished listening to the cd, I immediately turned on the OBC and listened to "Putting It Together". This one just sounded unbearably boring and the whole thing utterly lacked character.
I do adore the clarity and hearing it with toned down orchestrations. The harmonies sound perfect and "Sunday" sounds gorgeous.
Overall, I am pleased with another recording, but I have to admit that I was a little bored and I was just reminded by how uniquely perfect Mandy and Bernadette were.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

I thought the Cockney was a clever choice since Dot is from the lower classes - which is where an artist model would have come from in 19th century French society, not to mention she's illiterate -- and the disparity in accents emphasizes the difference in social standing between she and George and serves to further explain why he's so curt and dismissive and superior acting towards her. In a British production her having a "received" (RP) accent similar to his wouldn't have made sense. We don't have those sorts of distinctions accent-wise in America, but in Britain they very much do and thus it was necessary for Dot to have some form of lower class accent.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

Yes, I suppose I understand the reasoning, but it's just not to my liking.

I dislike the use of a saxophone sound, rather than a trumpet.

I just completely dislike it, and there is no drive or sense of urgency behind any of the songs, particularly "Putting it Together" and the opening number - not to mention "Gossib." Deathly slow tempos, no drive, and I just totally hate it.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

I was actually pleased with the absence of the obnoxious trumpeting, except on George's entrance in Putting It Together where it would have actually made sense.
The tempos are indeed another thing, almost like putting the emergency brakes on this one when all you want to do is to get things moving a bit more quickly.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

Could I please point out that Dot does not sing in a Cockney accent - it worries me that I have to point out such basic issues..but many don't listen, so who could possibly be surprised..?

It's great to hear the real tempi, rather than the quick times that they had to carry out for the OBC

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

I was thoroughly impressed with 'Putting it Together' in this production. The use of technology to enhance the visuals and illustrate the story was stunning. I believe Jenna's performance only comes through on the recording if you've seen the show. The smaller orchestra is gorgeous and brings the lyrics up front. Daniel's performance leaves one speechless.

I never said it was cockney. I know it's not. Due to my limited knowledge of foreign dialects, that's why I said "cockney-esque."

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

Well the good people of Yorkshire would have issues with it being described as "cockney-esque" - whatever that might mean...the accents are very different.

The choice of accent is no more strange than having her have an American accent, which would be alien in Britain. But the point, at least in the UK, would be to demonstrate the social differences in the characters, such as the Boatman having a Scottish accent, the Celestes having Estuary accents and the Old Lady with her RP.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

My term "cockney-esque" wasn't meant to offend, but as I said, I am completely ignorant when it comes to foreign dialects - I did my best to describe it.

As I also said, I understand the reasoning for the difference of accents - however, they're not to my liking. I agree - they are French - them being British isn't any different than if they're played American.

Accents aside - I don't care for the recording. I don't like the orchestrations, and the spoken dialogue on the record sounds amateur and dramatic in a very daytime TV way. I also hate the tempos. Where's Gemignani when you need him?

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

The tempi are correct. They had to be hurried along for the previous recording. I think it's pretty obvious you don't like the recording and that's fine, however, I much prefer this production and the recording to the originals - as a production it works a great deal better.

re: The new Sunday in The Park Recording...

If the original tempos were meant to be this slow, then why on the DVD are they not that slow?
