So, I am listing to the new cast recording of La Mancha the one with Stokes And I have a qustion. I know the original cast included Marin Mazzie but yet she is not on the recording. Why is this?

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was the revival's original Aldonza. Mazzie came in as a replacement.
Yes, unfortunately Marin did not open the revival with Stokes Mitchell. From what I have heard about her performance and from what I have heard from the CD I feel that it was a crime that Marin Mazzie did not get to open the revival. Although I did not see Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Aldonza I can tell you that Marin Mazzie gave one of the best performances I have ever seen. Her voice had the range to sing the role and she really transformed herself into Aldonza.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was excellent in that production. Still, I think she's a performer that's better live than recorded.

I rather like her grittiness on the recording.
And her New Jersey accent.

The whole production was one big, boring (British) snorefest. The cast was very mediocre, with Mastrantonio being the standout. The whole experience was significantly more thrilling when Stokes decided to sing the higher option at the end of Impossible Dream. His rendition still gives me goosebumps.

I think Mitchell, in general, tends to be a powerhouse voice, but surprisingly little star-power and charisma on-stage. I actually like Mastantonio on the recording, so the two of them together make for a pretty decent La Mancha (to the ears).
Of course, hearing Marin sing that material would probably make me melt.
I like everything about the revival disc sans Stokes.
Love Marin, but in this production, MEM was better---
As far as Stokes.... during the early put of the run, he did the higher option on "Impossible..." just about every show. Towards the end of the run, he picked his spots. He was in
just about every performance, unless he had a scheduled vacation. (I believe that his wife was pregnant during the run as well )- and there was a period where he needed some vocal rest so he missed a few days.
This is one of my favorite cast albums. I don't know, maybe the revival didn't work onstage, I didn't see it, but the recording is AMAZING.

Did you get a chance to see Stokes in "Ragtime"?
^^ Sure did, and I've seen better since.

I saw Marin and Brian and I thought they were excellent. Brian's Impossible Dream was awesome.
I also liked Mark Jacoby and the rest of the cast.

Better shows? Better performers?
You saw "Ragtime", but think BSM lacks stages charisma and star power on stage? I thought his Coalhouse was amazing !

His anger as Coalhouse was the same as his anger when he lost the Tony to Alan Cumming. Which was acting, if either?
I loved Stokes in DO RE MI at Encores! but I haven't been impressed with his performances otherwise, including his solo CD.
I saw MOLM with both Mastantonio and Mazzie. Mastantonio was so mistcast and actually ruined the show for me. She seemed to walk through the show like a third grade music teacher with no grit. Mazzie on the other hand not only got dirty with her makeup (Mastanontio seemed to need perfect make up) but gave Aldonza all the sweat and grime she needs to work in the show.
