RE: historical precedent for not inviting critics to their openings. This goes WAAAAYYYY back, but the Shuberts, tiring of Alexander Woolcott's (then the reviewer for the NYT), nasty comments, not only did not invite him to their openings, but tried to ban him from purchasing a ticket. Of course, Woolcott/NYT were having none of that, had a third party purchase a ticket and Woolcott continued to write nasty comments when he was displeased and made SURE that the world knew what the Shuberts were up to. They quickly lifted the ban and Woolcott again was able to make his masty comments over the counter.
