I too took my mother to see Cabaret a few years back. It was both our first Broadway show. We saw Raul Esparza and Molly Ringwald's understudy Heather Laws. I remember being completely creeped out by Raul and loving him at the same time. His performance remains one of my favorites of the last several years.
As I said, Molly was out when I saw the show. My mom and I were undeniably disappointed. Heather was a good Sally, I remember. But I never enjoyed her performance because I wanted to see Molly more than anything. It sounds stupid, but that really ruined my first Broadway experience.
On a lighter note: Of all the stage performances ever given, Natasha in Cabaret is THE one that I would have wanted to see the most. I've seen you-know-what's of her and it's true, her voice was atrocious live. But I loved every second of that tape.

Rath-
I saw the 1987 revival and was underwhelmed by it. Grey and Regina Resnick were excellent, but nothing else about the revival did it for me. Alyson Reed was a second-rate Sally and Gregg Edelman was his usual dull-as-dirt self as Cliff. Nora Mae Lyng was good as Kost.
Mendes' production, IMO, was much darker than the '87 revival, which was basically a by-the-numbers restaging of the original.

Posted: 12/4/05 at 9:37amI saw Raul and Molly Ringwald for Kids Night on Broadway when I was about 12 or 13 and loved the show. But I later returned to see Susan Egan and Adam in the show before it closed and I understood the show A LOT more. I loved Susan's Sally, unfortunately I did not enjoy her Millie as much. Out of curiosity, did anyone see Teri Hatcher on the national tour?

awww, so many people saw Raúl. I love that he had two separate runs, and they were both before my time.
The Teri Hatcher question's come up before, and I know there are people who saw her, so hopefully one of them sees this!

mef - I never said the '87 revival was different from the original.
What I'm pointing out is that the '98 revival is still CABARET - which was, from the beginning, a dark, raunchy, sexy, distressing work in itself. Mendes did not make it that.
