Posted: 5/5/05 at 4:52amI'll let you look up the answers to your questions about the shows that closed at ibdb.com, but I'll quickly answer your question about Assassins. Yes, there were a handful of cast changes. Douglas Sills was playing Booth and Raul Esparza was playing Zangara when they were preparing for the original opening date. Both pursued other projects rather than rejoining the case when the revival finally went into production again.

The Spring before Sept 11. I decided I had to see Lion King and bought my tickets six months in advance. Then the attack happened. Being in NYC eleven days after was an experience for me. At the time I was running an afterschool program, and I let the kids know where I was going and for Arts and Crafts I let anyone who wanted to make cards or anything make them and i brought them with me. The kids made American Flags and thank you cards; it was a very emotional experience for me.
and I saw Lion King and Les Mis.

I arrived for vacation in the City on 9/13, and fortunately saw Stones in his Pocket that final weekend. Most audiences were pretty sparse (the performance of Les Miz that I attended had a house of under 100 -- they invited everyone down to the orchestra).
Tick Tick BOOM closed shortly thereafter (late Sept, I think) --I heard reports that many felt the title was inappropriate for the mood of the city. Too bad --- it was a fun show that had nothing to do with terrorism

I had been visiting friends in NY on 9/2 and hadn't really planned on a return visit for a few months. After 9/11 there were lots of stories in the DC papers about all the B'way shows closing and the dearth of visitors to the city. The Post ran a photo of the audience at "Phantom". It was just pathetic. I counted exactly 14 people in the photo I saw (and you know that show was doing really well before.) Anyway, I decided I had to get back. I'd heard that Carolee Carmello and company at the "Kiss Me Kate" revival had decided to turn over half their salaries to the house so free tickets could be offered to the families of the 9/11 victims, as well as the firefighters, police, and rescue workers. So two weeks after the tragedy I ran back to NY and saw KMK that afternoon in a BEAUTIFULLY packed full house. Then that evening I saw "Phantom" to ANOTHER full house. Of course, the houses were mostly filled with locals who had come back to see these shows for the umpteenth time and who wanted to support 'their' Broadway. It was an incredible experience and one I know I'll never forget.
A click for life.
