Theatre Employment

Start by seeing what you can do in your high school, or your area. Community theatre is a great place to start, especially a children's theatre. Check out your local newspaper for any theatre listings and then give the theatres a call and see if they have anything. Get some experience under your belt before college. Once you get there, really try to get involved with the productions that your school puts on. Depending on where you end up going, there could be very few or very many groups that do shows. If you end up at a large school that has student-run theatre companies, get involved with at least one of them. Your name will spread throughout that community and give you lots of experience. Also, try to gain as much experience from as many aspects of backstage tech work as you can. The more you know about lights and sets, etc, the more you're going to be able to accomplish and offer as a stage manager.

Start working the internet: web sites like backstagejobs.com and playbill.com have listings for volunteer (non-paying) positions. From there it's only a small step to build that resume for the larger profile stuff.
