I hate it when they change the names of Broadway theatres. The Plymouth will now be the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and the Royale will be the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. How do you feel about them changing the names? I would much prefer if the original names of theatres were kept.

I've decided that they should rename the Ambassador the Melanie Griffith Theater and the Belacso the Flop Theater....you all know why.
I don't like it. Sure, it's great to honor people who have contributed a lot to theater, but losing these old-fashioned names like the Plymouth and Royale is like losing part of the theatrical past. Blah.
if you call the Belasco the flop theatre what does that make the broadhurst and the plymouth who has just as bad track records???
I really don't care for the names. They don't flow like saying "yeah im going to the Royale theatre and the plymouth theatre." Bleh! At least the names are better than putting a corporate sponser on it.

I'm still convinced that Martin Beck must be one pissed off ghost right now.

lol to that! Yeah, I saw The Sound of Music, and The Music Man in there(i think) but when you look back, in a matter of a couple of years someone might ask you "oh, whats the name of that theatre again?" and you wouldn't know becuase the names all changed. Just a couple months ago i was wondering where the Martin Beck theatre went, because i was young when i saw TSM, but i just found out its now the Al Hirshfield.
By the way, there already is a thread on this topic (see above)

yankeefan go home,
before you go insulting the Belasco, perhaps you should learn to spell it....
I feel the same about name changes. Chicago theatres have been doing that lately, most recently the Shubert Theatre was bought out by LaSalle Bank, to be renamed the LaSalle Bank Theatre. 1) I HATE that and I will ALWAYS call the Shubert the Shubert. 2) Why is "Bank" in the title??!! If they were gonna butcher the building's name, they atleast could call it the LaSalle Theatre and scrap the Bank. Sorry y'all, I'm worked up! ::listens to "Avenue Q" and chills down::

that's disgusting! I don't mind these recent Broadway changes but the practice of adding a name brand to EVERYTHING is out of control. it still bugs me seeing that happen with sports arenas. on a theatre, it's just depressing. as soon as that happens on Broadway, I'm i'm becoming a woods recluse.

it's like in "fight club" when ed norton starts talking about how the constilations are going to have corp names... the starbucks galaxy...
Incidentally, WiCkEd4LyFfE, the revival of The Music Man played the Neil Simon Theatre, not the Martin Beck/Al Hirschfeld. But The Sound of Music did indeed play the Martin Beck.

don't lie it. Interestingly, the Plymouth to be come the Schoenfeld, is hosting BKLYN writen by a Schoenfeld.
Can we rename the theatre where Brooklyn is playing the Shill?
I think all the theatres should have kept their original names in the first place. Names should not be changed. Especially to a BANK or a person just because they contributed a lot to theatre.
I swear if the Shubert Theatre on Broadway becomes the US Cellular Theatre, (or anything but the Shubert) I will die. I know of a theatre recently renamed the US Cellular Theatre. Isn't that terrible.?!?!
Keep the names we have already!
"I would much prefer if the original names of theatres were kept."
But then we wouldn't be able to honor the theatrical greats by naming a theater after them. Which would you rather have? "Chanin's 46th Street Theater" or " The Richard Rodgers Theater?" "The Alvin" or "The Neil Simon?" "The Uris" or "The George Gershwin?"
The only thing constant is change. Be thankful the old theaters are still here and not torn down.
I agree that the only thing constant in this world is change. However, there are plenty of ways to honor folks who deserve to be honored, rather than changing the current names of institutions. How does that Martin Beck family feel about the recent renaming of the theatre previously named for him. Hooray for the very deserving Al Hirschfeld, but couldn't someone have figured out another creative way of honoring him which wouldn't have been at the expense of Martin Beck's legacy. The whole name changing thing is way out of control.

I think they should keep the original names. Soon they have too many theatres named after god-only-knows-who and the whole 'honor'-thing has lost its point. I also think they should have things like "Cadillac" and "Ford" out of the picture - they are producing cars, and have nothing to do with Broadway.

It pisses me off to know end when they change the name of a theatre. The theatres are culture history. They better leave the Majestic alone!
