Kristin Chenoweth meets the stiff musical demands of Cunegonde. But am I the only one who's tired of her Kewpie doll approach to everything?

what a shame - its such a beautiful score.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Is it me, or in that picture does she looklike Sally Brown?

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

How long have some of us pointed out that the woman has ONE note in her whole repetoire? And looking through the candide pics on Broadway.com, she needs to think about some ADULT roles and SOON. She's not looking very "childlike" anymore.

Other than Kissel, Chenoweth got nice reviews for CANDIDE and the good reviews combined with her WICKED raves might actually help the Tony to go to the girl in the pink dress and not Pinkins.

She would win the Tony for Wicked, not Candide. They should only base the nominee on their performance in the show they're actually being nominated for. It makes sense, you know?

You know it and you want it... you just can't believe you've got it.

THANK you. I hate how everyone wants the Tonys to be based on lifetime achievement when the nominees are only being nominated for the show they are currently in. Grr, it makes me mad.

"How long have some of us pointed out that the woman has ONE note in her whole repetoire?"

But Al Dente surely you must be joking, why she can sing 4 octaves- geez, haven't you seen Wicked?
Furthermore: why was she in almost every single pic on broadway.com?? and has anyone ever seen her not smiling?

you think you know but you have no idea.....

I don't understand everyone's hatred of Kristin Chenoweth. She is unbelievably talented! I mean, have you guys not heard her?! There's no denying that she has an outstanding voice. Not only can she belt really high, but then she goes and sings Glitter and be Gay! Who cares if she doesn't have the best character choices...the bottom line is she's simply amazing. Why is it that no one appreciates her talent?

My problem with her is that she always sounds the same. I'm not a Kristin expert by any stretch of the imagination, but everytime I've seen and heard her, she's using that little girl voice. It worked for Sally Brown, bothered me in Wicked, and has me perplexed as I listen to Candide. She is a wonderful vocalist, but it's time to sing and talk in an adult voice when playing an adult role. AND before anyone feels inclined to tell me "that's just how her voice is", I beg to differ...she was just interviewed on the NPR station, and guess what, a normal speaking voice is within the realm of the possible.

HAHA...the announcer just described her as a little "puff ball" on stage (referring to the costume, I presume) and said something about her being cute as a kewpie doll. OY.

she is amazing...but that little girl voice can work for only so long. In 15 years she'll want to be Mama Rose and face what Bernadette had to deal with.

CANDIDE at the NYPhil was the place to be tonight. Not an empty seat.

Fine job nearly all around. Lonny Price's staging was OK, but his directorial gimmicks were embarrassing. Casting and asking that Maximilian be played as a flouncing gay man was a tired idea and a bad choice. Asking some of the chorus member to prance and mince as gay men was equally in poor taste.

That aside, the Phil played the score impeccably. Marin Alsop was top notch on the podium. LuPone (The Old Lady) and Chenoweth (Cunegonde) were both excellent as were Paul Groves (Candide) and Sir Thomas Allen (Pangloss).

Chenoweth proved that the kewpie doll voice is a personna because she would sometimes use it speaking but never when singing. She was funny and she is today's Cunegonde. No one can come close to handling the singing role. Of the various Cunegondes I've heard on record and stage no one has come this close to Barbara Cook to date.

Bernstein is one of the great musical theatre composers. Lyrics by John LaTouche (THE GOLDEN APPLE), Richard Wilbur and Sondheim, too.

CANDIDE is a must for any lover of the musical. If you don't know anything more than the overture you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you do know it, listen again and make your garden grow.

Well, Naturally she has a very high pitched voice..Thats just her normal speaking voice. She says on Broadway.com that in "The Music Man" she uses her normal speaking voice, and in that movie her voice is still squeaky.

Exactly. That "my helium canister is just offstage" sound is very close to how she speaks. Personally, I think she exaggerates it to heighten how powerful her singing voice can be when she lets rip. The opening of Act Two in Wicked would be a case in point. I was looking at her thinking "where on earth is that coming from?"

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

Kristin's show was shot here (I currently work for a film/tv studio) and I've heard her "real speaking voice" and she exaggerates it greatly. Much the way Fran Drescher does her accent. They both took years of speech and voice lessons to correct those "problems." I, for one, am getting a little tired of their excuses for using gimmicks. A talented lady need not rely on such pedestrian tactics.
