Some guy in England has set up a discount site similar to BroadwayBox.com, only in a forum instead, so anyone visiting the West End can see all the latest discounts for shows. We're currently in a bit of a ticket price crisis.
London Discounts
When I was in London in 2001, you could get tickets to almost any show for about £10-20. They might not be the best seats, but at least you had options. Most of the time, if you bought them just before curtain, they would upgrade your seating for free. This happened to me several times.
Rarely does any Broadway show offer any tickets less than $55 unless they are rush/cancellation tickets for which you need to wait several hours (or sometimes all day), lottery, or half the view is obstructed. When tickets at TKTS end up costing $50 each, THAT is a ticket price crisis.

What I mean by crisis is that plays, not musicals, are charging £40 a ticket ($74), which may not sound too shocking to Broadway prices but it's a lot here because it seems to have shot up in the past year and a half.
The result is people are put off from pre-booking tickets, which means they don't want to risk booking a hotel, transport, etc, when they may not get last minute tickets. Therefore the only audience seems to be on-the-day trade and Londoners.
But Mister Matt, you're right, that's one of the reasons I love London - you can get a ticket for any show on the day of the performance if you know how to (even stuff like The Lion King).
