I just finished watching the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie" starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore & Carol Channing.

I was wondering how it compared to the musical. I know some songs are the same, while some don't appear in the musical. Are both story lines the same and incredibly close or are they far from each other? Does Muzzy's scene with the stunts on Millie's date with Trevor Graydon occur in the musical? What are the huge differences?

Thanks!

I really enjoyed the movie, and I am in love with Ms. Channing's performance as Muzzy.

other than the title song and Jimmy in common, and having the same main characters, the stories are almost completely different.

Is there the whole fireworks scene near the end?

I couldn't picture the Broadway Muzzy like Ms. Channing's Muzzy.

The Muzzy in the musical was less outgoing than the one in the film. So, no, they didn't have Muzzy's stunts. Also, their are only two and a half songs in the film that made it to the stage version (The title song, Jimmy, and a little of I'm Falling in Love with Someone). I'll repeat what cooperross said: Other than using a few songs and the same main characters, the stories are almosst completely different.

I found the Muzzy in the stage production (Sheryl Lee Ralph) was more outgoing and diva than the Muzzy in the movie (Carol Channing).

The stage musical did retain the basic plot outline: Millie moves to New York, moves into Mrs. Mears' hotel, meets Miss Dorothy who also moves in, and they get mixed up in Mrs. Mears' white slavery scheme; Millie hopes to hook up with her boss Mr. Graden, but he falls for Miss Dorothy. But many differences, as stated. No "Trapioca" which I thought was a shame. The movie is so dang off-the-wall with Carol Channing and the white slavery thing, you just have to love it.

I liked Muzzy's character way better in the movie. She was like a nicer Diana Ross or something in the stage musical.

And Mrs. Meers isn't actually Asian in the musical. Don't know if that counts as a spoiler...

Mrs. Meers wasn't Asian in the movie either...she was played by Bea Lillie.

But, Mrs. Meers WAS Asian in the film. Bea Lillie wasn't. I love the film. The show did nothing for me.
