So, it was always my assumption after seeing the show a few times that Melchior never actually sees Moritz and Wendla's ghosts when they come onto the stage in "Those You've Known."
My friends opinions seem to differ. He never seems to look at them or acknowledge anything more than their voices...
Anyone have any thoughts?

I would agree that he just hears there voices. But I do think this staging was cheesy and just did not fit in with the rest of the show. It did not effect me emotionally the way I wanted it to.
*is in agreement with sfs*
I don't think very much thought went into the last 20 minutes or so of SA, direction or otherwise.

Agreed sfs - that whole number didn't do it for me. I think Groff really undersings the song on the CD also - not enough passion towards the end.

Agreed!
None of this show affected me as I HOPED it would.
I still enjoy the music but the show left me cold.

I Agree with all of you. I did enjoy the show a lot. And I love love love the music. But I went in thinking I was really going to be touched emotionally. And that did not happen. None the less, I still enjoyed the performances.

oh, compared to it live he absolutely does undersing it on the recording- but, I mean, obviously he's not going to sing it on the recording just as he does live- he had to make it sound pretty and all
I actually liked Those You've Known. I did feel like the whole ending of the show was quite rushed, and I did feel like, as much as I was sickened by *SPOILERS* wendla's death (if not simply in theory.. just the thought that something like that could actually, and HAS actually, happened makes me sick), it wasn't until Song of Purple Summer that the emotion really hit for me. And even after that, I started feeling it was sadder and sadder as time went on. So yeah, although I do think it could have been written better, I'm not even exactly sure how they would go about making the scene that much stronger. It's not.. unrealistic. It just happens too fast I think.
But anyway, I do like the staging of that scene a lot, I think its beautiful :)
And Jon Groff is SO good- he was really the one who made me feel what emotion I DID feel right at first. Lea and John are so amazing in that scene too

I wish he hadn't. I much prefer a less pretty sound with more emotional truth.
