Its all one word to me and pronounced
"Thr-uh-p-ny" Opera
Except say it a lot faster and British sounding. Silly Americans, we love you really.

Then why does this person, who is supposed to have a finger on the pulse of culture and is a "voting member" of the Drama Desk spell it incorrectly?

The correct title of this show is "Die Dreigroschenoper". Anything else is an English translation. Or an Americanization of English.
For instance, in the American recording of the Blitzstein translation there's a lyric in "Jealousy Duet" that goes:
"He's not in any danger
From some threepenny stranger"
while in the film "Mack the Knife", which was made in England, she sings,
"He's not in any danger
From you, some thrup'ny stranger"
Of course, in THW MSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, they sing
"Haypenny, one penny, tupenny, thrupenny..."

Posted: 5/5/06 at 2:39pmThe current version is "Threepenny". I have never seen it split into 2 words although I am sure some other version may have done it. "3Penny" is from the Sting revival.

Its such a great show. Very underperformed in the UK sadly but seen a couple of good productions and twisted arms to include some of its score in a concert the other year
