Titanic OCR and that friggin' Bellboy

Posted: 7/15/04 at 6:53pmEach time I listen to the wonderful Titanic recording I always shudder when, as the cast is singing the soaring "There she is, towering high..", the voice of the "Bellboy" starts that horrible screeching that completely shatters the moment. "Morning, Mr. Andrews, Hello, Mr. Ismay, Morning, Mr. Etches, etc." Was the role written to come across as obnoxious as it does?

Posted: 7/15/04 at 6:59pmIt IS obnoxious...and Forbidden Broadway did a great, screeching take-off of it on one of their CD's. They also poked fun at the "sparse" staging of Titanic with their song, "Ship Of Air".

Posted: 7/16/04 at 12:41amThe "Forbidden Broadway" sendup was great! I laughed so hard at that damn screeching bellboy section.

Posted: 7/16/04 at 12:45amI think I need to hear some of that Forbidden Broadway stuff. Which recording is the best?

Posted: 7/16/04 at 12:53amYou can't go wrong with the 20th anniversary collection. While it doesn't have the "Titanic" stuff (which one does?) it has a lot of their best stuff, including "Somewhat Overindulgent" (about Mandy Patinkin's over-the-top style) and "Old Revivals" (about the rash of Cameron Mackintosh revivals, to the tune of "Oklahoma") and lots more stuff that defies description in its brilliance.

Posted: 7/16/04 at 12:59amThank you. I am really only familiar with "new" upeat Broadway show of the 90s and such. Do the Forbidden Broadway cds go in chronological order by decade or something?

Posted: 7/16/04 at 1:14amUm...I don't think so. They tend to go by whatever's popular at the time, but I think the first CD was more across the board in terms of what shows they riffed (but I'm not totally sure since I don't own it). After that, I think they started concentrating on more current material. But like I said, I'm no expert (and I bet there are lots of people on this board who are!).

"Allo Mister Moneybags! Allo Missus Whatchamacallit!"
I also enjoyed:
"Bottom... shall we all meet at the bottom?"
