Part of this doesn't seem to be be new news but I couldn't find anything on it using Search. Burgess has been writing a Broadway musical version of The Preacher's Wife, and Loretta Devine just said on The Chew that she is workshopping it with him.
I found references to his writing it dating back to at least 2015, and a September workshop is mentioned in this OnStage blog article. The way Devine talked about it, it didn't sound like she was referring to something she did nine months ago.
