1903 Dorothy, The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are first seen on Broadway today in the original musical The Wizard of Oz, with music by Paul Tietjens and book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum himself, based on his own 1900 novel. Highlighted by comedian Fred Stone as the Scarecrow, the production will run 293 performances.

1926 As a three hundred year-old-opera star who wants to live three hundred more, Helen Menken must discover The Makroploulus Secret. This drama, staged by Charles Hopkins, will run for 11 weeks.

1936 Raymond Massey, Pauline Lord, and Ruth Gordon are the triangle in the solemn yet devastating Ethan Frome. This adaptation of Edith Wharton's novella by Owen and Donald Davis will run 15 weeks at the National Theatre in New York.
