1879 - Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore, opened. Arthur Sullivan conducted the orchestra while William Gilbert played the role of a sailor in the chorus and in the Queen’s Nay-vee.

1924 - Lady Be Good opened in New York City. George Gershwin wrote the music while Fred and Adele Astaire were well-received by the show’s audience for their dancing talents.

1930 Incidents from Emily Dickinson's life are the subject of Alison's House. Presented by New York's Civic Repertory Theatre, the play, written by Susan Glaspell, will later win a Pulitzer Prize.

1956 - CANDIDE opens at the Martin Beck Theatre with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Richard Wilbur, John La Touche & Dorothy Parker, and a book by Lillian Hellman (based on the novel "Candide" by Voltaire.) Directed by Tyrone Guthrie and choreographed by Anna Sokolow, it stars Robert Rounseville, Barbara Cook, Max Adrian and Irra Petina and runs for 73 performances.

1958 - Rodgers & Hammerstein produce their own new musical, FLOWER DRUM SONG, opening tonight at the St. James Theatre for a 600-performance run under the direction of Gene Kelly, and choreographed by Carol Haney. It stars Larry Blyden, Pat Suzuki, Juanita Hall, Ed Kenney, Keye Luke and Arabekka Hong. Also in the cast: Baayork Lee.

1971 - Opening night at the St. James Theatre for the Public Theatre's successful summer-in-the-park show TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, with a book adapted by John Guare & Mel Shapiro (from Shakespeare) ,music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by Guare. Directed by Shapiro, the new musical stars Raul Julia, Clifton Davis, Jonelle Allen and Diana Davila. Also in the cast, as "Citizens of Verona and Milan," are Jeff Goldblum and Stockard Channing (making her Broadway debut.)

1968 - Promises, Promises opened on Broadway. The play ran for 1,281 performances, earning $35,000 in profits each week of 1969. Dionne Warwick had a hit version of the title song.

1973 - Closing date of the new musical RACHAEL LILY ROSENBLOOM AND DON'T YOU EVER FORGET IT (which never officially opened) at the Broadhurst Theatre after seven previews, with music & lyrics by Paul Jabara and a book by Jabara & Tom Eyen. Eyen directed and Tony Stevens choreographed star Ellen Greene. Also in the cast: Wayne Cilento, Andre De Shields, Anita Morris, Carole Bishop, Thomas Walsh and Jabara himself. Produced by Robert Stigwood & Ahmet Ertegun, the show was written for Bette Midler. She turned it down, but did attend the closing performance tonight (on her birthday), in spite of the fact she was readying her own upcoming show: BETTE AT THE PALACE.

1987 The Ritz (now the Walter Kerr) Theatre plays host to Penn Jillette and Ray Teller, whose Penn & Teller opens tonight and will go on to run for 130 performances.

1999 Liza Minnelli returns to Broadway with a salute to her father, film director Vincente Minnelli. Minnelli on Minnelli is presented at the Palace Theatre, where her mother, Judy Garland, had triumphed in solo concerts.

ON THIS DAY IN:

1919 Lady Astor was sworn in as the first female member of the British Parliament.

1955 After losing an eye in an operation three months earlier, Paul Muni returns to the cast of Inherit the Wind at the National Theatre. He is greeted by the audience and cast members with a standing ovation.

1955 Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, defied the law by refusing to give up her seat to a white man aboard a Montgomery, Ala., city bus. Parks was arrested, sparking a year-long boycott of the buses by blacks.
