ON THIS DAY IN:

1889 The Paris Exposition formally opened, featuring the just-completed Eiffel Tower.

1915 - Babe Ruth hit his first major-league home run. He was playing for the Boston Red Sox at the time. ‘The Sultan of Swat’ went on to smash 714 round-trippers before he retired, as a New York Yankee, in 1935.

1935 The Works Progress Administration began operating. We could use it again today.

1963 Actor-director Montey Woolley dies today in Albany, New York. His most memorable performance was portraying Sheridan Whiteside -- The Man Who Came To Dinner. He was 74 years old.

1992 Actress Marlene Dietrich died in Paris at age 90. I went to the auction house in NYC that allowed the public to see her posessions before they were auctioned-off. I wish I could have afforded to buy something...a bobby pin...
