ON THIS DAY IN:

1886 King Ludwig II of Bavaria drowned in Lake Starnberg.

On this day in 1966, the Miranda Decision was handed down by the United States Supreme Court. The 5-4 decision regarded the rights of individuals to remain silent because “...anything you say, can and will be used against you in a court of law.” It held that the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States “required warnings before valid statements could be taken by police.”

1971 - Singer Francis Albert Sinatra made an attempt to retire from show business following a performance this night at the Music Center in Los Angeles, CA. ‘Ol’ Blue Eyes’ got a bit restless in retirement, however, and was back in Sinatra - The Main Event at Madison Square Garden in November 1973.

1986 Benny Goodman, the clarinet-playing 'King of Swing,' died at age 77.

1987 Actress Geraldine Page dies of a heart attack at the age of 62. The stage star of Sweet Bird of Youth and Agnes of God was performing in a revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit at the time of her death. As a screen actress she was honored with seven Academy Award nominations before finally winning Best Actress for her turn in "The Trip to Bountiful." She also earned two Emmy Awards for roles in TV movies and, though nominated thrice for Tony Awards, was never awarded one.

1994 A jury in Anchorage, Alaska, blamed recklessness by Exxon Corp. and Capt. Joseph Hazelwood for the Exxon Valdez disaster, allowing victims of the nation's worst oil spill to seek $15 billion in damages.

Yes. The Madwoman of Central Park opened the same day the Mad King of Bavaria folded.

Wildcat, I know far too many Miss Havishams as it is. Rotting wedding cakes and such.
I myself have been left standing on the dock with a suitcase in my hand and a big gardenia tacked on to my collar. Talk about your mad queens!

Speaking of Paul Lynde...

(not you, nm. I, too, have a faded gardenia pressed between the pages of a book. Although I think the book is "The Front Runner")

The Front Runner LOL I haven't thought about that book in years and years. When I was in junior high a friend of mine and I used to keep a copy hidden from our respective parents. We would get it out secretly and read it aloud to each other. Talk about oral interpretation.
