1994 Broadway's original Blanche Dubois, actress Jessica Tandy, dies tonight at the age of 85. A legend of both stage and screen, she won three Tony Awards for her portrayals in A Streetcar Named Desire, The Gin Game and Foxfire. She also garnered an Academy Award for her role in "Driving Miss Daisy." Her husband and longtime co-star, Hume Cronyn, shared a Tony Lifetime Achievement Award with her earlier in the year.
2001 On a gorgeous Tuesday morning, terrorists fly two commercial airliners into New York City's World Trade Center "Twin Towers," and a third into the Pentagon in Washington DC, causing mass death, destruction and chaos in both cities. All Broadway and Off-Broadway theatrical performances are cancelled for the next two days. I was leaving the voting polls when the 1st plan struck. Theatrical performances are also cancelled around the U.S.
After 9/11, I heard that the City needed volunteers to type up death certificates for WTC victims so that their families could process the victims' "estates". It took around 2 wks for everything to be set up for us volunteers to begin.
I'll never forget the shock of discovering that the 1st day that I went in was the birthday of 1 of the victims whose certificate I was inputting. I was in such a state that I lost the paper that I had written the name of the victim on. I've always wanted to find out the name of this person but was too hesitant to try to go thru the red tape only to be frustrated by being told that I didn't have the right to the info.
So, here's my birthday acknowledgement of my WTC "Jane Doe." I'm very sad to think that there may be a possibility of other victims whose birthdays were in the immediate time frame of the tragedy of WTC & how their families & friends are dealing with it.
I want to post about it today since I couldn't remember the exact date.
2002 On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, many Broadway and Off-Broadway shows cancel or reschedule performances, leaving their theatres dark for the day.
