1981 Actress Barbara Loden dies today of cancer at age 48. After making her Broadway debut in 1957's Compulsion she appeared in Look After Lulu and After the Fall, for which she won a Tony Award. Loden also was a film actress, acting in Elia Kazan's "Wild River" and "Splendor in the Grass." Eventually she married her director Kazan and took on directing the drama "Wanda," a film she also wrote and edited.
1997 - Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) died of a heart attack at her Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Calcutta, India. The Albanian nun had celebrated her 87th birthday just nine days earlier. The recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa gave hope to millions, caring for, helping and listening to the poor and downtrodden.
