1973 Playwright S. N. Behrman died today, age 80. He was the author of many plays, including The Second Man, No Time for Comedy, and Fanny.
1980 Just nine days before his 79th birthday, director-producer Harold Clurman dies today. Shows he helmed include Awake and Sing!, Member of the Wedding, Tiger at the Gates, Waltz of the Toreadors and Bus Stop. Clurman was also a drama critic for the New Republic and The Nation.
1997 Actor Burgess Meredith died in Malibu, Calif., at age 89.
