Today's Random Question: Ticket Lotteries

Why do producers have ticket lotteries, especially for hot shows like HAMILTON? I’d like to think people are motivated by ideals other than money, but selling a ticket for hundreds of dollars versus a few bucks would seem to be a no-brainer for in-demand shows. And this is without mentioning crowd control and resources needed daily to manage the lottery, rather than just farming out ALL ticket sales to Telecharge or another vendor.

Are producers shamed into doing it, or is there some sort of requirement?

Don’t get me wrong, I think lotteries are great for those who have more time and flexibility than money. But why do they exist?
