i took one of my friends to see urinetown last night...he had never seen it and i knew the show was something he would enjoy. i had seen the show twice before with the original cast and was very impressed with carollee carmello's portayal of miss pennywise...she really did a great job. i was happy to find out that jennifer laura thompson was in the show (didn't she leave for a bit?) and she was wonderful as usual. by the way, i hear ms. thompson is pregnant so many congrats to her!!! jeff mccarthy was hysterical as usual.
i heard that tom cavanagh had taken over as bobby strong and told myself to NOT compare him to hunter and to just try to keep an open mind when seeing him perform. i had spoken with a few people that work at the theatre and they had told me that his acting was great but his voice was...well...i won't use the exact wording. still...i went in with an open mind. i'm sorry for any "ed" fans....but he cannot sing. i found myself cringing at some moments. he was talking more than singing...i don't see how anyone cast him in the show. he couldn't hit some of the notes and when you have him doing a duet with jennifer laura thompson it just makes it even more obvious. i was absolutely shocked. i know it's his first week...but has anyone else seen him and care to comment?

Posted: 5/23/03 at 7:33amI saw him Tuesday night. No, he's not a great singer, but he has a lot of charm that seems to get him through it. After I adjusted to the lack of a great voice in that role, I had a great time and enjoyed him.
#2it seems
Posted: 5/23/03 at 9:11amit seems to me that a lot of shows are casting big actors who can't sing at all just to make more money. i would think not as much money would come in because who really wants to sit through something with a terrible singer. anyway i suppose if they are an incredible actor than the signing doesn't matter...to some people

Ew... this makes me SO angry, because Charlie Pollack was FABULOUS. I've seen Hunter and the last time I saw it, Charlie had covered for him (this was right after Hunter left to go do LSOH). Charlie could SING and I may have preferred Hunter's take on the role, but Charlie could definitely act.
I saw Jennifer Laura Thompson when I was out to breakfast yesterday morning... she was at the table near us. She was with someone with a Urinetown shirt on... no idea who it was. I didn't get a good look at his face. I totally got in a Urinetown mood though, as was tempted to go see it last night (I ended up at Man of La Mancha instead because we got really great tickets for a really cheap price... would have PREFERRED seeing Nine, but such is life...). I must see it again while Carolee's in it. I've seen Nancy and Vicki... I loved them both. Nancy is hilarious and Vicki is just a complete spazz... honestly, that woman is insane... I love her. LOL. I'm SO curious to see Carolee's take... someone told me she "even hit all three G's!" Is she ADDING notes?? LOL!

#4Great voices vs. great singers
Posted: 5/23/03 at 11:01amI always think it's what's behind the singing that counts. Does Elaine Stritch have a great voice? Probably not, but can anyone sing "The Ladies Who Lunch" like she can? Do Bob Dylan or Tom Waits or Paul Simon have astonishingly great voices? No, but they are terrific singers. Cavanagh, as I said before, does not have a great voice, but he's a good Bobby, in my opinion, for the qualities he brings to the role.
