I really hope this happens. Tune is a brilliant director, and if Yeston writes new songs it will turn Mambo Kings into a definite must see.
Yeah, though he has a history of providing sublime stagings for not very good material. I think everyone would love for him to return to Broadway directing the next great musical, whatever it may be.

But can producers trust him? I think the whole Goodtime Charley/Stage Door Charley, whatever it was called, seriously decreased his credibility.
Gothampc, what are you talking about? I am unaware of these going ons. Please do tell.
I don't care! Tommy Tune is one of my favorite directors (the other being Hal Prince). If he is then I most definately will see it.
Oh good god PLEASE let this HAPPEN!

Tune was touring Goodtime Charley (or whatever it was called). The musical had gone through at least three name changes and the show changed more times than anyone wanted to admit. But it was headed to Broadway (the theater was booked, the marquee was up). However, Tune was too sure of himself. He was starring in the show and one night he broke his foot. Call in the understudy!! Oops the understudy doesn't know how to dance! For the rest of the out of town tryout, one actor had to act/sing the part, while another had to do the dances.
In dark corners of Joe Allen's, it was whispered that the understudy was only in the show to fulfil a "menage a trois"
Oh, you are speaking of the 'Busker Alley' incident. I don't understand why that would make him not trust worthy to direct 'Mambo Kings'.

You're only as good as your last show. After weeks and weeks of watching rehearsal/performance, the understudy could do none of the choreography. Producers don't like their money wasted like that and may not trust Tune to pull it together.
Busker Alley aside, it would be great to see any new staging by Tune - and remember, the My One And Only staging was a doctoring job that turned out beautifully.
As was Grand Hotel. That show was in shambles and managed to pickup the pieces and have success.
Tune is a genius. He has a way of providing that little extra spark to everything he directs. And he also has the uncanny ability to combine extremely stylized staging concepts with very true and honest character direction.
I can think of a few recent musicals that could have benefited mightily from his directorial style.
This has to happen. AND we'd get some new Yeston!
