 Yes. Totally. It's been years since I've seen it too. Of course Tommy is the pinball wizard!!

Elton plays the narrator of the song, referred to in the film's credits as the Pinball Wizard. Tommy becomes the Pinball Wizard, yes, but only by dethroning Elton's character ["He can't beat me now / I've always been the champ / I know every trick / No freak's / Gonna beat my hand..." and, later, "I thought I was / The bally table king / But I just handed / My pinball crown to him..."], at least in the film.
