So I know the shows rehearse earlier on Tony day and sometimes they have an audience. I was wondering if anyone has ever been and if so who can I contact to get in?

I've been twice.

It's a closed rehearsal. Invite only. There is no one to "contact" to get in. Sorry!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I had a friend who had a friend (one of those things) who worked in one of the producer's offices. He got us a couple of tickets. They're free but you do have to get them from 'someone'. I remember she said you just have to get them from one of the producers and there's a lot of them around. I suspect for most folks it's a little harder than that.

I do know that quite a few people were up there (in the first mezz) and for some reason they spread themselves out into all the rows. My friend and I went down to the first row and from there we could look down on all the casts as they came in for their rehearsal. It was fabulous. There were bunches of folks from every show and all in their costumes. Most were friends who rarely got to see each other so they were milling about and visiting and posing for pictures. I remember the funniest was seeing the town ladies from The Music Man with their long dresses and feathered hats, posing with the neo-nazi looking punks from the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. (That shows you how long its been!)

I'm not positive, but I think the link was on the TONYS website.

In some regards, the rehearsal is more entertaining than the actual broadcast. The stand-ins are hilarious!

defyinggravity07 - I think you're mistaken. I don't ever remember the rehearsal being simulcast online. It's a closed rehearsal. I remember seeing bootleg videoclips on youtube, but nothing professionally simulcast...

It was broadcast somewhere because I remember Grease winning best revival during it.

Last year, I was messing around with the webstreaming on the Tonys website to make sure my computer was up to the task of the red carpet and technical awards later that night, and I was EVER so surprised to find they were webstreaming the rehearsal. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it definitely happened, although the webstreaming did cut off before we could find out if Xanadu or Cry Baby was officially the best musical last year. re: Tony Awards Rehearsal?

I watched the feed, too. Unfortunately the audio cut out when Patti LuPone stopped the rehearsal in the middle of the "Everything's Coming Up Roses" runthrough and made some demands, after which lots of people ran scurrying as she sat centerstage waiting for whatever it was to be resolved. Of course, the audio came back after the disruption was over and they were running the song a second time.

I presume that was an error that they left the link to watch active, but I'll certainly look for it again this year since frankly it was more fun than the actual broadcast.

I hope they were doing it on purpose, to check that the webstreaming would work for the evening, which means there's no reason they wouldn't do it again this year. re: Tony Awards Rehearsal?

It was also much easier to watch than the actual broadcast, thanks to TVU Player letting me down hardcore last year. D: It'd better work this year, or I shall sulk!

It used to be that all you had to do was drop a line to the producer of the broadcast asking for passes for the dress rehearsal. When I did it the awards were being done from the Lunt and a few hundred of us crammed the mezzanine. Great fun. But the broadcast was better.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I think it was an accident. Audio cut out last year, and then the "feed" switched to NY1.
