Tony Committee Announces Eligibility for Categories

This is what they've decided so far -- expect another announcement from them in couple of months for the shows that have recently opened and/or are about to open):

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met today to decide eligibility of nine Broadway productions for the 2007 American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards, presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing.

Kiki & Herb Alive on Broadway will be considered in the Special Theatrical Event category.

Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! will be considered in the Special Theatrical Event category.

Byron Jennings, Lily Rabe and Laila Robins will all be considered in the Featured Actor and Actress in a Play categories for their performances in Heartbreak House.

Michael Arden, Thom Sesma and Lisa Brescia will all be considered in the Lead Actor and Actress in a Musical categories for their performances in The Times They Are A-Changin'.

Patrick Page will be considered in the Lead Actor in a Musical category for his performance in Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

All other decisions were consistent with the opening night credits.

This is the second time the Tony Awards Administration Committee has met this year. They will meet three additional times to discuss the eligibility of shows opening in the 2006-2007 season. The cut-off date for eligibility is May 9th and nominations will be announced on May 15th.

The Tony Awards will be broadcast in a live three-hour ceremony from Radio City Music Hall on the CBS television network Sunday, June 10th.

The Tonys are presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing. At the League, Gerald Schoenfeld is Chairman and Charlotte St. Martin is Executive Director. At the Wing, Sondra Gilman is Chairman, Doug Leeds is President and Howard Sherman is Executive Director. For Tony Award Productions, Elizabeth I. McCann is Managing Producer and Joey Parnes is Coordinating Producer.

Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss/White Cherry Entertainment are Executive Producers of the 2007 Tony Awards. Mr. Weiss will also serve as Director of the 2007 Tony Awards.

The official Tony Awards web site, www.TonyAwards.com, is developed, designed, and hosted by IBM, an official partner of the Tonys.

re: Tony Committee Announces Eligibility for Categories

So I guess that means that we'll have Special Event category this year. Also, this means that the GRINCH will be considered a Musical and not a Special Event.

I don't see a mention of Short.

I don't see why Fame Becomes Me wouldn't be. Chita Rivera was eligible last year with recycled songs. Short is here with an entirely new score.

This also means that everyone from A Chorus Line is Featured, correct?

I don't think A Chorus Line was considered for this meeting (and neither was Short). We'll have to wait until their next press release, which should be in couple of months.

Michael Arden will indeed rise again. This was not his time. But it will come. IT WILL COME!!! (If he doesn't win a Tony in the next 9 years, I owe a lot of people money.)
