Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

Looks like Tonya Pinkins will sing "Lot's Wife," Assassins will go for "Everybody's Got the Right," Avenue Q will do an abridged version of "It Sucks to Be Me," and Wonderful Town will do either "Conga" or "Swing."

I can't wait. :)

Yay! Avenue Q is doing It Sucks to Be Me! But what will be taken out? re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I think there's a swear word in "It Sucks to Be Me." (I don't own the Avenue Q cast recording and haven't listened to it in a while) Anyway, that's what they'll probably "abridge."

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

Yup, there's a bit of profanity in "It Sucks to Be Me." They'll probably just change it... but isn't the number like 6 or 7 minutes long? Maybe they're also going to shorten it... that seems a little bit longer than Tony performances typically are, doesn't it?

Was there any doubt Wicked would be performing?

I don't think they've announced those yet.

We've had this discussion before, I think it was decided For Good would probably be best. Thats not official, but thats what I am putting my money on.

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

Tony numbers in recent years have generally been edited down to around 4 minutes. Jane Eyre infamously only got two and a half minutes the year they were on the telecast -- when they balked at the time, CBS told them it was two and a half or nothing at all, so they coped (meanwhile Nathan and Matthew HOSTED that show, did a full number uncut, and the show won 12 awards so imagine how much free advertising The Producers got that year).

Q will be doing an edited version of "It Sucks To Be Me."

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

The Tonys are a show that should be like the Oscars. Run for 4 hours, have all the musical numbers intact & let everyone have their boring speeches

I think one of the Oz numbers ( that should open the show ) is " I Go To Rio " . The other number should be maybe Bi Coastal or I Still Call Australia Home. Many of the numbers are under 3 minutes so they will have a lot to choose from

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I think I read somewhere that Hugh is opening the show with "One Night Only" from Dreamgirls since that is the "theme" of this year's show - "One Night Only" is printed on the ads for the show, plus I recently saw the CBS commercial and it starts with Hugh pointing his finger at the camera saying "one night only". Now if that's the only song that he opens with (if the info is correct) I don't know but I guess we will find out soon!

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

Wicked should do a more upbeat number, rather than "For Good". I'm thinking "Defying Gravity".

Good possibilities for "Wonderful Town", and Great choice for "Assassins".

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I'm betting on "Defying Gravity" too. Both gals get to sing, it has a special effect that will sell the show's magic, and frankly, it's generally considered the most exciting moment in the show. I don't think "For Good" will have power out of context, since it requires the experience of the first act relationship. Remember, Idina did "Gravity" alone on Letterman, complete with the elevation, and it worked well. Add La Chenoweth, and the rabble breaking in -- you've got a moment that will result in a lot of tix being sold.

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

What's to edit for "It Sucks to be Me"? Cut "What do you do with a BA in English" and the song's at approximately five minutes. Kate says "damn" once, "f***" will be bleeped out anyway due to the 5 second delay, and "hell" is only said twice. "Along Came Bialy" was worse in content and they played that in full (starting at Little Old Lady Land) at the Tonys two years ago. I don't really see the problem.

my theory for remaining shows is as follows
boy from oz: I go to Rio
wicked: the song about the emerald city or popular
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I am NOT happy about Big River not being allowed to perform. I know it's no longer on Broadway, but it's just not fair! Hahaha.

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I have been yelled at for double posting, but here it is again,
Wicked will do Defying Gravity. The number has been reorchestrated to fit the time constraints.

re: Tony Musical Numbers Announcement

I think it SUCKS that Big River doesn't get to perform! How wonderful it would have been for a television audience to see the beautiful marriage of song and sign language.
