I'm new so be nice....lol.
I know this has been posted and I made a valiant effort to find it to no avail. Are there videos of the Tony Awards broadcast? If so, can someone tell me where (only if they are legal)?
Thanks a lot for the info if you have it.

There are two compilation tapes (with more to come I hope) of performances from the shows called "Broadway's Lost Treasures."

1967 was the first year that the Tony Awards were broadcast on TV. That was the year of THE APPLE TREE, CABARET, WALKING HAPPY and I DO! I DO!. Mary Martin and Robert Preston were the hosts.
Lynn Redgrave and Jill Haworth were "Friends of the Tonys" a nice name for handing over the awards to the presenters.
The broadcast was about an hour long.
The next year was a longer broadcast. These early tapes are wonderful...all the history!

SOme the very early Tony awards were telecast in new York (I have seen clips of Mary martin getting her Tony for SOUND OF MUSIC) but in 1967 ABC telecast the Tonys nationally for the first time. The 90 min broadcast contained numbers from the 4 nominated musicals (CABARET, I DO I DO, WALKING HAPPY and THE APPLE TREE) and most of the awards. The longest speech is barely 30 seconds.
The first one I saw was in 1971 when they celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Tonys by showcasing songs from previous Tony winning musicals. I watched every year and when VCR's came in I started preserving the on tape (1979 onward.) I would imagine most theatre fans from that time onward have done the same. believe they can also been seen at the Radio/TV museum in NYC.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
