Kinky Boots didn't deserve 98% of the awards it received. Period. I was flabbergasted as well that it beat Cinderella for Best Orchestrations.

I think If/Then is also a strong contender. The guitar parts are absolutely stunning.

EDIT: But yeah, I'm listening to the Bridges score on its website. Absolutely beautiful.

The Tony committee has absolutely no clue what goes into orchestrations, let alone how to nominate the best ones. They tried to ax the category altogether a few years ago.

In response to the OP's question, it's the same as every other category: they vote for the ones they think are the best. And as with every category, it's subjective.
