I don't know what to say about the Vel Commercial--it's sacrilege to me. How could Merman do that to such an important, landmark song associated with her? I wonder if they needed Jule Styne's permission; I'll bet they did.

I preferred hearing her disco version of "Alexander's Rag Time Band" which she did on the Johnny Carson show (which can be accessed after viewing the Vel commercial). Go, Ethel!

Merman shilled for products all through her professional life. I always thought it was interesting that a performer so identified with New York would be chosen by advertisers to hawk their products in the rest of the country. Did anyone think Ethel Merman really washed dishes or drove her own car into a Texaco station?
