For my college audition, I need a song from the traditional musical theatre repertoire. What exactly is traditional? Is the Music Man traditional? Chicago? What's traditional?
I'd say stick to the safe side and sing some Gershwin, Cole Porter or Richard Rodgers.
Probably anything that's got a recognisable melody and isn't rock.
Something from the Golden Age.
Styne, Coleman, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, Early Sondheim (eg A Funny...Forum), Lerner and Loewe, Bock and Harnick, Meredith Wilson, Porter, Herman et al.
Something from the 30's, 40's, 50's or 60's would be best, I think.
basically anything from Oklahoma to How to Succeed...That's what's usually considered traditional. You probably could sing somehting from the late thirties too.
