Traveling to NYC

I was thinking of planning a trip to NYC sometime this spring or summer. Probably Thurs-Sun. I live about 6 hours from the city but have never driven in it. Are there places in New Jersey that you can park your car for several days and take a bus or taxi into the city? Also I know that staying in the theater district can be expensive, so what other parts of the city are cheaper to stay in that are easily accessible to Times Square/ Theater area? Has anyone ever stayed in New Jersey and taken a bus or taxi into the city and if so what part of NJ? Thanks so much for your help.

You can stay in a hotel in Secaucus (sp?) NJ and then take the train into Penn Station each day if you choose.

I think it's like a 15 minute ride.
And the hotels in Secaucus are a million times cheaper than in NYC.

Soho is cheaper, or even downtown, but you prolly want to take a subway to TS. I have taken a train into New York City, it's Jersey Transit. www.njtransit.com You can park your car at Trenton and take the Red Line (NE Corridor Line) into Penn Station, it's about $20 round trip. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Also a great deal on staying in the city i found are these apartments www.1291cityhomes.com, check them out it's about $200 a night for an apartment on Broadway and 55th...

I am from Philly so usually I park at Hamilton (a bit safer than Trenton) and then take the train into the city.

I only recommended Secaucus because it's closer to the city and since he is 6 hours from his home, it's easier just to stay fairly close...and cheap.

There's a Sheraton Suites Hotel in Weehawken, NJ, which is right outside the Lincoln Tunnel. NJ Transit Buses go into the city (Port Authority ... theatre district) frequently ($2.30 each way), and you can also take NY Waterways Ferry ($5.50 each way including bus transportation in NYC). Bus stop and ferry terminal are very close to hotel (1 minute walk). Bus takes about 10 minutes to get to Port Authority (without traffic) and ferry takes about 6 minutes to cross the river, but then you need to get on one of their busses to get you to the theatre district, or any other area of the city.

SweetQ, where do you park in Hamilton? I always worry that any parking lot at the station might be full when I arrive.

I live in Hamilton and I take the train in frequently. They have just put in a new parking garage that beats either of the crappy ones they have in Trenton. The payment system is a lil screwy and the rates almost doubled for all of us who were used to parking there for 3 dollars a day...but it's safe and the garage is never full anymore. They plan to build another one too.
I believe they are letting their monthly parking pass holders use the lot and alot of daily commuters are using the garage. I never have to worry about finding parking if I want to go in on a week day anymore!

miken- that used to be a problem- not anymore.

As a matter of fact, when 4 of us were going to NYC, we went to Hamilton and there was no parking. My mommom and I got on the train and went into the city.
My mom and aunt drove to Trenton and parked there and took the train from there. They got to the theatre 5 minutes before showtime.

Whoops- that was a bit off topic.

Anyway, to answer to your question: They built a huge parking garage. It is wonderful and so convient. However...it can add up to quite a bit of money. But honestly, with the convience of it and it being safer than Trenton, I think it's worth it.

NJgirl and SweetQ, thanks for the info about Hamilton! A couple other questions -- how much is the parking? And can you leave your car there for more than 24 hours at a time? Thanks!

You can park there overnight in the garage. Not sure what the rates are now. It may be something like 12-14 dollars a day now. I haven't had to overnight there yet, but my last day in NYC I left my car there about 13 or 14 hours and it was 7 dollars. Under 12 hours is 5 dollars.
There's a sign on the gate when you take your time stamped ticket when you enter that tells you the rates. It's run by Nexxus properties..maybe you can find a website or phone number for them? I'd offer to look for you but I won't be out that way until the end of the week.

ETA- Hamilton is right off of the highway (95/295) and really easy to get to. And I don't think anyone mentioned it...it's $18.75 round trip to NYC Penn station and takes about an hour and 15 mins. But check the schedule bc you have to buy 2 one ways (11 dollars a piece) if you plan on using the train at peak commuter times.

There are lots of options in NJ. We've stayed at Comfort Inns in West Bergen, or the Paramus area. You can take a bus to Port Authority for $3 each way. I've asked folks at the hotels for a safe place to park and they've always been gracious to suggest spots.

mikem - NJgirl has got all the correct info!

The prices are not totally outrageous- just a bit more than it costs to normally park there. They are a h*ll of a lot better than NYC! And yes, their payment system is a bit messed up- there's gotta be a more effective way to do it. I haven't been there in a few months so I don't know if it has changed.

NJgirl and SweetQ, thanks once more for your help! I think the parking has gone up since NJgirl last used it -- it's $10 for 3-12 hours and $13.50 - $18 for more than 12 hours. Sometimes I go for the weekend to NYC, but I HATE driving in the city. At $18 a day, the parking adds up fast. I'll probably keep going to Metropark, where the parking is a flat $5 for each 24 hour period.

That's definitely incorrect info on the parking rates. My total for this past Sunday (under 12 hours) was 5 dollars and the Saturday before that when I was in all day to see 2 shows was 7 dollars. Not sure where they are getting those rates from...bc I'd be having someone drop me at the train station if I had to pay THAT much! lol
I'll buy the 18 dollars a day as close to accurate....but the other rates...that website must be joking....bc my parking receipts don't agree! :)

Metropark is probably a very good choice if you don't mind driving up there!
