So mauriposa and I took advantage of the sweet 2-for-1 coupon I snagged at Sidetrack the other week and went to "Tupperware" at the New Colony on Friday :) I really, really enjoyed it!! First the "bad" (which is not even really bad, just nit-picky lol) and then the good:
***SPOILERS WITHIN***
1. Although I can certainly appreciate his good looks, I didn't totally understand the purpose of the flashback/"ghost" version of Dolores's husband. In the very first song she sings she says something along the lines of "I didn't know you very well but you were my best friend anyway," and so I don't know if I buy him emotionally supporting her to become more independent, start joining Tupperware parties, etc. Then he totally disappeared throughout the second act minus walking out the door during the finale, so...?
2. The book dragged just a tad, and the first act could benefit from some trimming. Also, I felt that Dolores's dissatisfaction with her new independence and constantly being "hassled" by Brownie and the girls came much too fast. During act 1 she seemed all for Tupperware and her eventual passing up of the promotion offered by the male Tupperware rep. seemed really sudden.
All that said, I seriously pretty much loved it. The costumes and bright colors/the whole retro look of the show was great to look at. I love that Lyla Johnstonton is played by a guy. I LOVED the music, all the songs were clever and catchy as were the lyrics. I especially like "Plastic Revolution" and the "2 hours" song. The three supporting neighborhood ladies (Kitty, Gretchen, and...Gert? Gertrude?) were all fantastic and had some really funny lines (rice krispies anybody?). Oh, and any show where there is TAP DANCING!!!!!!!! has me sold :) Dolores and Brownie were extremely like-able characters, and Lyla had just the right mix of "I want to hate you because you're being kind of a b*tch but also feel sorry for you since you're right, being a housewife really is all you know how to do."
In short (ha!) I HIGHLY recommend that everyone reading this go check out Tupperware this weekend because it's (I think?) their last weekend there! I'm scared of the bus but we made it okay haha I wish I still lived in the city, I'd go again next Friday. It was fun fun fun!!
