The US entertainment industry is in crisis, hit by a double whammy of strikes that have crippled both theatre and film production. Charles Spencer and Matt Wolf report

The lights may still be bright on Times Square, but most Broadway shows are currently closed as a bitter dispute between theatre producers and stagehands enters its 12th day with no end in sight.


Still running: Xanadu
In all, 27 shows have been cancelled until at least next Monday, and, after the breakdown in talks last weekend, no new meetings have been-set up between Local One, the union branch representing the stage hands, and the League of American Theatres and Producers.

According to the producers, the stagehands, who earn about $150,000 (£75,000) a year, have been "feather-bedded", and theatres regularly have to employ workers who are surplus to requirements.
