Ars Nova

Presents

UNCHARTED: GAVIN CREEL

Sunday, June 13, 2004
8 PM & 11 PM

New York, NY – Ars Nova (voted “Best of New York 2004” by NY Magazine) presents Gavin Creel as part of its Uncharted series for singer/songwriters. Join Gavin Creel for back-to-back shows on one night only. A mix of acoustic pop with an R&B/funk flavor, Creel is etching out a new sound that will undoubtedly make waves on the music scene. Collaborating with Creel are industry greats David Cook, Robbie Roth, Adam Roberts, and John Clancy.

Gavin Creel (composer/vocals) most recently appeared in the premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s new musical Bounce and has performed in such shows as Bat Boy, Hair and Thoroughly Modern Millie, for which he garnered a 2002 Tony nomination. Creel has had a fast fun ride on the theatrical scene here in New York and has also been writing music for his debut album, combining his energetic charisma onstage with his passion for music and human connection to bring about a new kind of “socio-musical” thinking. Join Creel for an exclusive sneak peek at his new material before he heads into the studio to start work on what is destined to be a groundbreaking debut album.

David Cook (co-composer/keyboards) is currently the Musical Director and keyboardist for Jive Recording Artist JC Chasez. David has also recorded and performed with Aerosmith, *NSYNC, Mary J. Blige, Richard Marx, The Miami Sound Machine, Samantha Mumba, Nelly and pop sensation Britney Spears, among others.

Robbie Roth (co-composer/guitar) is a songwriter/producer from Toronto, Canada. Since the charting success of his first album, WATERSHED, Robbie has had a number of tracks licensed for use in feature films, and, most recently, appeared on recordings alongside Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley.

Adam Roberts (bass) has a B.A. in music from the University of Michigan and an M.F.A in jazz performance from Suny Purchase. He has toured Europe and the States and has played with Melba Moore, Anthony Braxton, and the Goldsparkle Band. He has also offered his talents to such rising stars as Shayna Steele, Shoshana Bean and Chester Gregory.

John Clancy (drums) is currently one of the city's premiere freelance NYC drummer/producers. Clancy has toured and recorded with East Village songstress Lisa St. Ann, co-orchestrated for a theatrical production JUST SO, is a founding member of the cult band pOp*stAr*kiDs and is the current percussionist on the Broadway musical Caroline, or Change.

He's doing another show in August in The Pink Room and it's produced by Broadway World. I don't know any dates or times for the event, just that it's going to happen. Plus there's always The Mystery Plays which goes up at the end of the month til July 10th or 17th if it extends.

Update:

The 8 o'clock show is sold out (yay!) but the 11pm still has tickets available so tell friends. I'm sure bunches of people here are going to be in the city to see all of those events on the 14th (Bway by the Year 1963, Bway Under the stars, Q unplugged) and if you're in the city, why sit in your hotel room? Head over to the Ars Nova. It's $15. June 13th. It'll be fun.

I will definitely be there (8:00) with two friends who only know Gavin because I make them listen to Millie in the car all the time! (If I'm driving and you're in my car...you're listening to showtunes whether you want to or not!:))

GREAT night! Didn't think it was possible for me to love this guy anymore than I already did...His voice sounds SO different than it does on his cast recordings!

He puts on a really good show...hope to see much, much more of him!

I caught Gavin at the 11:00PM performance of this show. He was terrific! It was really nice seeing him in such an intimate setting with just 150-200 or so people in the audience. Gavin played all new pop-flavoured music with the exception of "Pulling Away" (which he did at this first concert at the Fez) and a cover of the Pointer Sister's 1980's era "Automatic". Gavin was engaging and spent a good deal of time talking to the audience. He acknowleged his family (his Mom, Dad, and Sister were present), friends, and fans for all their support. I hope that Gavin will be recording a CD of his music soon. He is a real talent!

Yeah it was a fantastic night, you could tell how much fun he was having, and this what he truly loves. He was so grateful for all the support from all the people who came to make it a sold out show. It meant bunches to him. Thankfully another one is coming up in August with Broadway World and Laura Benanti. Very exciting. Plus he will be acting for a month or so over at the McGinn/Cazale with The Mystery Plays. It's a great show, not to be missed. Really interesting.

That's all for now, thanks so much for your support, I'll keep you up to date.

It was nice that Gavin thanked you for your work on his website at the show, Kayla! Did you go out to the Art Cafe after the 11:00PM concert with Gavin and the gang?

I liked when he talked about his best friend getting married and how, "It's like...watching your little sister...I don't know...get her training wheels off...or something..." :)

He's so funny...he was coming out with some crazy stuff.

And I love that one song, "I'd rather drink a glass of Drain-O than fall in love with you..."

Yeah, he's a little silly lol.

That song is called, "I Can't Handle That" - his most requested song :)

"I know, I know, how do you have a most-requested song when you're not on the radio?" hahaha...and telling the audience to give his mom and dad a hug after the show. The guy could not be more lovable.

Kayla, are any of his lyrics available online anywhere? I would love the ones to "I Can't Handle That." THANKS!

His lyrics aren't online, no. Something to think about in the future though.

I'll be adding some pics from the concert soon. Just a little change-around to the front page, I have some ideas. Yes change-around is a word lol. But yes, I was very grateful that he mentioned me. He apologized for not thanking me at the 8pm show, and so now we're fighting lol. j/k but he was so sweet and his parents were even sweeter, if that's possible.

Once again - shameless plug, The Mystery Plays at McGinn/Cazale June 22-July 10 (or 17th if it extends), it's really good. He practically is the first act and then plays various roles in the 2nd act. It's fantastic. Then Joe's Pub in August with Laura, which for some reason, I cannot find tickets online. Probably after July 12th's Bare Concert.

You just gotta love Gavin!!

"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer

"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher
