Understudy vs. Standby?

Hey,
stupid question, I'm about to show my ignorance but I've always wondered:
what is the difference between a standby and an understudy?
the most I can figure is that the understudy is actually a part of the show when not performing the role, a standby is only around to take over for the role, otherwise they are not in the show regularly.
is one ranked higher than the other? it seems like in the past the standby is the first to take over the role, understudy second -?
Can anyone answer this question and clear this up for me?
thanks! :)

YEP:
Understudies are part of the ensemble and then take over for a lead, usually with advanced notice.
Stand-bys have one job - wait backstage and be prepared to go on. They can find out the night before or during intermission.
Today, however, stand-bys and understudies are sometimes mixed in the show. What I mean is that standbys sometimes are part of the chorus. It's more incentive to take the job as a stand-by.
