I'm currently attending a university but doesn't offer musical theater. I came here because I didn't know if I wanted to do actually do musical theater or not. But now I know it's what I want to do, but I'm not sure which college to transfer to. I can't spend an arm and a leg on college. Does anyone have suggestions for great musical theater colleges? I'd like to stay in the midwest, but any suggestions would be helpful!
Thank you!

what school do you attend now?

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

I currently attend University of Wisconsin Madison. I'm looking for something not freakishly expensive. I mean, putting in tons of money for a degree in the performing arts isn't exactly ideal..especially for me re: Univeristies/Colleges
I've looked into Michigan but it's really expensive. But thanks!!

There is a student board...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It's really difficult if you don't have the money to spend. All the really fine programs are mostly at private schools (ie. CCM, UM, Carnegie Mellon, Syracuse, Ithaca, etc.) I hear Wright State in Ohio is a good program and I believe that might be a state school, which means less money. Good luck in your search.

You need to look at Universities in your state. That is the Cheapest way to go. All the other schools people mentioned are VERY expensive. Look at Universities in your state and look into their theatre/music theatre depts.

Kent State University. Inexpensive, great financial aid and scholarship opportunities, in the midwest, and a great New York Showcase program.

One lives in a field of influences, one is influenced by everyone one meets, everything is an exchange of influences, all opinions are derivative. I know it's not in the Mid-West but UF offers a BFA in musical theatre and it's not that expensive, plus they offer good fin. aid.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I attend Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA.

If you have any questions regarding our program please ask. I work in the Conservatory office (actually using my boss' computer right now!) so I have access to tons of information.

UW-Eau Claire had a great theater program when I was there, but that was back in the early 90s (alas, many moons ago). I've no idea what it's like now, but you might want to check it out if you're interested in staying in Wisconsin.

The school I'm going to mention looks expensive, but if money is a problem they give a LOT in grants...so dont disregard it right away.

I am at American University, the program is really starting to get better and if you arent sure that you want to do it, all of the majors are great, pm me if yo uwould like some more information
